Grieves Joins Lacrosse Hall Of Fame

Richard Grieves '83, considered one of the most exceptional midfielders in the history of Washington College lacrosse, was inducted into US Lacrosse's Greater Baltimore Chapter Hall of Fame on January 31, 2009.

Dicky Grieves came to Washington College as a highly touted attackman from Boys Latin School in Baltimore, where he led his high school team to consecutive MSA Division I championship games. Grieves began his freshman year on attack, but Coach Bryan Matthews '75 moved him to the midfield position, where he excelled.

The high-scoring All-American played for Coach Matthews on teams that reached the NCAA post-season tournament all three years, including the 1982 squad that lost a 9-8 overtime heartbreaker to Hobart in the championship game. In his senior season, under first-year coach Terry Corcoran, Grieves led the squad to the NCAA semi-finals. That year, he was named Division III Midfielder of the Year; he had tallied 120 goals and 91 assists as a Shoreman.

In 1986, he was selected to play on the U.S. Men's National Team that won the World Championship in Toronto, Canada.

The former lacrosse great has been an alumni representative on Washington College's Board of Visitors and Governors since 2004.
