Class, practice, internship...photo shoot? It's not a typical day in the life of a student-athlete unless, like WC lacrosse player Jimmy Kielek '09, you're posing for a magazine cover.
The senior attackman will be featured on the cover of the April issue of the NCAA's Champion magazine, the association's quarterly publication. According to the magazine Web site, each cover showcases an exemplary student-athlete. Inside, in a two-page "Faces of the NCAA" feature, Jimmy Kielek shares the story of his aspirations for a career in the medical profession and the benefits of Washington College's premedical program. Because he has seen his share of sports injuries, Kielek is particularly interested in orthopedics.
Kielek, a biology major on the premedical track, interned with local orthopedic surgeon Dr. Fred Lohr last fall. Over the course of the internship, Kielek sat in on patient consultations and surgeries.
"I got to see so many different injuries," he said. "It was a good experience."
During the magazine cover shoot in January, Jimmy posed in his lacrosse gear in Dr. Lohr's office, on the waterfront, and at WC's Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium.
"It was pretty exciting," Jimmy said of the experience, which included an interview with a Champion magazine writer as well as the cover shoot. "I think it will be good for Washington College in terms of getting our name out there, and I feel honored to have been chosen—even though the photo shoot was really cold!"
The magazine is scheduled to mail the third week of April. You can find the issue online next month at ncaachampionmagazine.org
