Students vie for cash prizes for the most innovative ideas for campus sustainability.
George Washington was one of the first public figures to promote sustainable community practices, even as he built a new nation and laid the foundation of the American presidency. With our namesake's pioneering spirit in mind, students are making sustainability sexier than ever with the George Goes Green challenge this April.
The Student Environmental Alliance (SEA) and the Center for Environment & Society (CES) are sponsoring competitions to spotlight waste reduction, recycling, water and energy conservation. In the "George Gets Ingenious" category, students vie for cash prizes for the most innovative ideas for campus sustainability. At the national level, the College is participating in RecycleMania, which dovetails with President Tipson's Climate Action Commitment. Awards will be announced April 26 at the Mutt Strut and Earth Day celebration, a joint education and outreach venture between WC and the local Humane Society.
"Our goal is to get more people involved," explains Shannon Holste '07, a research associate with CES. With this in mind, CES has partnered with OIT to introduce eco-videos and a G3 blogspot where students can post energy-saving tips.
The College is making a big push for sustainability, says JoAnn Fairchild, CES program manager. "We're encouraging people to 'think paws-itive' and to celebrate G3 and the power of film as forces of environmental change."
