Alumni Council President Lorraine Polvinale described the Athletic Hall of Famer and College trustee emeritus this way: "Bill Russell is something of an icon at Washington College: an All-American goalie who withstood the toughest onslaughts launched from Coach Charley Clark's rocket arm; a devoted fan who put the 'color' in his commentary during Shoremen home lacrosse games; a business-savvy leader on the Board of Visitors and Governors who always rose to a challenge, and the Alumni Council's go-to guy who could always be counted on to motivate and inspire his classmates."

Russell directed the presidential search committee that selected Douglass Cater. He served as Class Agent and as a member of his Reunion Committee.

A three-varsity athlete who gave up football only when the College retired its program, Russell supported recent capital projects for athletics—the Benjamin A. Johnson '11 Lifetime Fitness Center and Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium.
