For him, it's a homecoming; for the College's tennis program, it's a return to its roots. Dave Marshall '88 was named head men's and women's tennis coach in July. A twotime conference champion during his collegiate career, Marshall was the first in a long line of nationally-ranked tennis players at Washington College and was the first WC player to record 100 singles and 100 doubles wins. He was inducted into the Washington College Hall of Fame in 2005, along with Fred Wyman, Marshall's coach while playing for the Shoremen.
"It is a tremendous honor to be able to come back to Washington to help Dr. Bryan Matthews rebuild the tradition that Dr. Wyman started," remarked Marshall. "I hope someday to be able to have as much success as Tim Gray and to be remembered as a person who was able to help Washington College tennis at an important time." Gray '86, who will be inducted into the College's Hall of Fame in October, coached the Shoremen to the 1994 NCAA Division III National Championship.
The president of Dave Marshall and Associates, Marshall manages operations at 15 tennis clubs and has established Sea Colony Resort in Bethany Beach, DE., as one of Tennis Magazine's Top 50 Resorts. He has sent 125 players on to play collegiate tennis.
Marshall, who has had extensive success playing on the USTA circuit, brings with him as senior assistant coach Ellis Ferreira. Ferreira is a three-time Grand Slam Champion in doubles and was formerly ranked #1 in the world in doubles. With their tennis experience and knowledge, as well as their many contacts in the sport, Marshall and Ferreira are poised to bring Washington College back to the top of Division III tennis.
