Ashley Jones '11 (left) and Christa Frison '11, this year's Vincent Hynson '87 scholarship recipient, were among 15 incoming freshmen and their families attending a "Welcome to Washington College" party held at the Annapolis home of Alumni Citation honoree Jean-Francois Seznec '70 and his wife, Thackray Seznec '69. College President Baird Tipson welcomed students, parents, alumni and faculty members to the August 9 event, which was sponsored by the Alumni Relations Office and the Annapolis Alumni Chapter.

For the first time in nine years, an alumnus is serving as Chair of the Board of Visitors and Governors. In July, Edward P. Nordberg '82, chief executive officer of Wakefield Capital Management, was elected to succeed Jack S. Griswold P'94.

Nordberg, who joined the Board as a gubernatorial appointee in 2003, says his highest priority is to bring greater renown to the school. "We do all kinds of things well," he says. "Our history, our location, our academic programs, the specialties we have, all rival the best liberal arts colleges in the country, and yet we have a very limited recognition. I want to try to broaden awareness of how special a place this is so that more people know Washington College as well as our alumni do."

Thomas Crouse '59, an international banker, and Alfred Shockey '55, an automobile executive, were elected alumni representatives to the Board in May. Crouse recently completed his first term on the Board; Shockley, the father of A.P. Shockley '84, is beginning his first term. Both are former members of the President's Visiting Committee.

"Our history, our location, our academic programs ... all rival the best liberal arts colleges in the country."

Another alum/parent, Geoffrey M. Rogers '80, was appointed to the Board in April 2007. The executive vice president of Glenmede Trust Company in Wilmington, DE, and recent graduate of the Harvard Business School was formerly a member of the President's Leadership Council. Rogers' son, Geoffrey, was graduated from Washington College in 2006.

Matthew T. Weir '90, who has served on the Board as gubernatorial appointee since 2001, was reappointed in July.

Benjamin Johnson, the son of William B. Johnson '40 appointed by the Board in 2005, was appointed to a full six-year term.
