It's a bright new world in Miller Library—literally. On August 9, the library became the proud recipient of a stateof- the-art Stellanova illuminating globe, imported from Germany. Ralph Thornton '40 spearheaded the friends-andfamily donation of the globe in memory of his classmate Owen Raymond Anderson, Jr.

A Chestertown native, Anderson died in August 2003, three weeks shy of his 84th birthday. Throughout a stellar career, he never lost touch with his local roots and his alma mater. A highly decorated World War II Army veteran, Anderson rose in the ranks at the National Geographic Society from a printing-press operator in 1946 to Executive Vice President in charge of production upon his retirement in 1991. He received Washington College's alumni citation in 1981.

"He would have been so proud to have his achievements at National Geographic and his love for Washington College combined this way," said daughter Penny Anderson at the Miller Library globe-unveiling ceremony. "It's the perfect tribute."
