Hope Floats
It takes some ingenuity
to design and launch a seaworthy
vessel, especially one
made of cardboard. A 225th
anniversary signature event
orchestrated by the Center for Environment & Society, the
Cardboard Boat Regatta—held
during the inaugural Waterfront
Festival—captured the imagination
of 15 teams of spirited boat
designers and mariners vying for
top prizes and bragging rights.
Fittingly, Capt. John Seidel and
the CES crew of Greenpeas propelled
themselves way ahead of
the competition, to take home
the Cape Horn Award.
Greenpeas crew members Liz Leipold '11, JoAnn Fairchild '84 M'94, Liz Seidel and Capt. John Seidel were first around the course.

Representing the Public Archaeology Lab, Teresa Fewlass '99 and Elizabeth Clay '08 won the Kon-Tiki Award in
Leakey the Mastadon.

Coinciding with an Athletics Department Blue Chip Weekend for recruits and a picture-perfect September day, the Waterfront Festival attracted throngs of spectators to cheer on the Cardboard Boaters.
Ducks Unlimited members Maggie '06 and Maureen Sentman '10 captured the Cutty Sark Award for best design and construction with Mighty Duck.
The Freudian Slip, with Professor Kevin McKillop, Capt. Spencer Case '08 and crewmembers Jenna Lapointe '09 and Katie Juromski '08, won the Linda Greenlaw Award for most team spirit.
