Rowers Take Caspersen Cup

The rowing teams captured first place at the 13th annual Caspersen Cup, held in Baltimore on April 1. The men's rowing team won the novice eight and finished second in three other races, while the women rowers took first place in three races. Washington finished the regatta with 53 points, besting Johns Hopkins (50 points) and St. John's (22 points).

The Shoremen won the novice eight in 6:00.45, besting second-place St. John's by nearly five seconds. The men's varsity four finished less than one second behind race-winner Johns Hopkins, while the Shoremen's varsity eight also finished second in 5:54.79. Sophomore Chris Broadwell and junior Ryan Trone finished second for the Shoremen in the men's pair in 7:34.98.

The Shorewomen finished first in the varsity eight, novice eight and the novice four races. The varsity eight won its race in 6:22.29, 20 seconds ahead of second place Hopkins, while the novice eight defeated second-place Hopkins by nearly 26 seconds in 6:46.85. "The women's varsity eight did an excellent job," noted head rowing coach Mike Davenport.

The Shorewomen also captured a victory in the novice four in 7:25.14.

Washington had an impressive second-place showing in the varsity four, completing the race in 7:25.49. Davenport raved about both the men's and women's impressive performances.

"Both the men's and women's novice eights did fantastic jobs," stated Davenport. "This is the best I have seen by our novices in 15 years."

The Caspersen Cup is held annually between Washington College, Johns Hopkins and St. John's, the three schools whose rowing programs benefit from The Hodson Trust. Hosting the regatta rotates among the three each year.
