CHARLOTTE R. HIGNUTT marked her third year of living in southern Mexico in August 2005. "Am I homesick? No. Am I living in Paradise? No. How do I feel about this anniversary? All of it has been a fascinating learning experience. There have been challenging times but no boring times. I am now 81 and at the time of one's life when things wind down— friends die, the phone rings less often, one tires more quickly and feels increasingly less significant as younger generations take over one's space. Moving to another country interrupted this cycle for me. Suddenly my survival was entirely my problem, and the props were gone. That I have made it through this period, and have emerged successful to some degree, is a satisfying and humbling experience."
