Ermyn Jewell Heck '24, the College's oldest living alumna, passed away September 4, 2005, at the age of 102. A charter member of the Washington College Women's League, she chronicled the group's history and gave more than eight decades of service to Washington College. A former Chestertown High School teacher and a classics scholar, she taught Latin at the secondary school level and at Washington College. Mrs. Heck was a guiding force in the Chestertown Library, as well as a leader in the Women's Literary Society, serving as author of its history and president for many years. She also was instrumental in establishing the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority at Washington College and served for many years as an advisor to the group. She was preceded in death by her husband, Preston Patterson Heck '24, and two younger sisters, Carolyn Jewell Strangmann '36 and Emily Jewell Webb '33. She was the mother of Sam Heck '67.
Basil "Tut" Tully '39, a retired chiropractor, died August 4, 2005. During his undergraduate years, Dr. Tully played football, ran hurdles and broad jump in track, and was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity. In 1982 he was inducted into the College's Athletic Hall of Fame. Dr. Tully graduated from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and served in the Navy aboard a destroyer in World War II. He opened his Chestertown practice in 1946 and served the community until a month before his death. His wife, Frances Kreeger Tully '42, died in 2000.
Ellen Bordley Schottland '42 died September 30, 2005 after a brief illness. While at WC, she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. Mrs. Schottland and her husband, Stanley, have been longtime supporters of the College. An active sports person, she and her husband provided the leadership gift for the College's tennis center, which bears her name. They also created the Schottland Business Leadership Awards, which help students gain work experience in corporate America and then go on to receive a Master's of Business Administration. She was a member of the 1782 Society and The Fifty Guinea Club. She is preceded in death by her father, Carl N. Bordley, Class of 1911.
Thomas A. Larsen M'74 died February 12, 2005 due to a cancer-related illness. He taught at Deal Island and Crisfield high schools and was Vice Principal of North Caroline High School in Maryland. He was later employed by Kent County as a coordinator of federal programs and worked with the Pupil Personnel Department. He also served as president of the Kent County Rotary.
Paul G. Schunke, Jr. '89 died September 25, 2005, in a drowning accident in North Carolina. He was 38. Paul, along with his longtime sailing buddy, John Macielag '89, was a founding member of the Washington College sailing team. A resident of Washington, DC, he frequently sailed the Chesapeake and was a regular crew member aboard Macielag's log canoe, Patricia. Paul is survived by his parents and a brother, Mike.
