Alumni Program Gets New Leadership

After an eight-year hiatus, Judie Berry '88 M'91 has returned to the College to serve as interim director of alumni relations. Berry succeeds Eleanor Shriver Magee '93, who has accepted a development position with Habitat for Humanity of Talbot County.

Berry previously worked at the College from 1984 to 1997, first in the President's Office, then as associate registrar, and finally as associate director of development.

During her service to the College she earned a bachelor's degree and a master's degree—both in psychology.

For the past several years, Berry has been recreation supervisor for Kent County Parks & Recreation and project coordinator/committee member for the Kent County Community Center Project.

Berry will guide alumni and parent relations efforts in the coming months as the College undertakes a programmatic evaluation and a planning process for the future of alumni relations at the College. The College has engaged Daniel N. White, a consultant with eAdvancement of Princeton, NJ, to assess the alumni program, to conduct an alumni/donor survey, and to work in concert with staff and alumni volunteers to develop a long range plan for the Alumni Association that supports the College's comprehensive Strategic Plan—a document now nearing completion.

Among the goals of that Plan are to engage more graduates in a lifelong relationship with the College and to provide the means for alumni to support the College in its quest for greater national eminence.

"Judie's professional experience, her love of the College, and her commitment to our alumni relations impressed us all," remarked Beth Herman, vice president for development and alumni relations, on the hire. "She will be a fine leader for our alumni relations staff and volunteers. I have great confidence in what she and Dan will help them accomplish."

White was head of alumni relations at Princeton for almost two decades and has worked as an advancement consultant for the past six years. Herman expects his comprehensive report on Washington College's alumni program will be finalized early in 2006, and that a blueprint for alumni relations—encompassing marketing, alumni support of admissions, and fundraising implications as well as events—will be in place by next fall.
